Cooling System Controller for an electric coolant pump and fan(s) — Instant On, Manual Override, Slow Pulsing (variable) of the coolant pump, Variable After-run, Overheat detection, Open sensor detection, Fail-On design

Description

Complete control of a cooling system with a non-PWM electric coolant pump and electric radiator fan(s).

Features:

  • Instant On – The instant this device is activated by the ignition it is doing its job, no waiting for the stupid thing to initialize.
  • Manual Override – Switches that ground the control relay, even if there is no power to the controller.
  • Slow Pulsing (variable) of the coolant pump – Allows the engine to warm up and stay warm in colder environments, no need to block your radiator.
  • Variable After-run – Ignition detection allows the Controller to run the fan (and optionally the pump) for a variable amount of time after the engine is shut off.
  • Overheat detection – Also a grounding relay controller, can be used to turn a light or other warning device.
  • Open sensor detection – If the wire to the thermistor gets broken, all three relays will be activated.
  • Fail On design – As much as possible, this device is designed to fail with the pump and fan(s) On
  • Developed and tested in the grueling environment of Endurance Road Racing.

This controller uses a simple analog design to control the relays of a water pump, radiator fan(s) and an overheat warning device.  A thermistor attached to the engine is required for temperature sensing, the design is for a 10 kOhm  resistance when the engine is at operating temperature, decreasing as it gets warmer.  The control is accomplished by grounding the activation coil of the relay for each device. The trip temperature for each of the (3)relays can be independently adjusted.  Both the Fan and Overheat relays control stays open below their set points, however, the coolant pump relay will pulse on and off when the temperature of the sensor is below the set point.  Both the on-time and off-time of this pulse can be changed independently.  Adjust the on-time to slightly stir the coolant (0.5 to 3 sec.), adjust the off-time to allow the engine to warm up and stay warm (2 to 14 sec.).
